All municipal buildings will remain closed to the public until further notice. Staff is available by phone and email during regular office hours. Please check this website for regular updates.

June 3, 2020 - Interest on Tax Arrears 

Interest will once again be applied to property tax arrears effective July 2, 2020.  Interest has been waived for three months on all tax arrears in an effort to ease financial strain on our residents while dealing with COVID-19.  

Athens Food Bank Donations:

An email account has been set up to accept E-Transfer donations, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  Cash or cheque donations can be dropped of at the Athens Free Methodist Church, Mondays 10:00 am - noon.

The food bank is a registered charity, tax receipts can be sent for donations over $10.00

May 8, 2020 - Fire Permits

Although the Open-Air burn ban has been lifted, residents must continue to follow all Federal and Provincial Government COVID-19 Orders which include physical distancing and no gatherings of more than 5 people.

We thank all residents for their patience and understanding while abiding by the Burn Ban and continuing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 through our communities and Fire Service.

If you can safely do so, by phone or with physical distancing, please check on your neighbours,  especially elderly people and others living alone.  There are regular electronic communications occuring between staff, Council, the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville and the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit.

Due to concerns over the COVID-19 virus, all playground structures in the Township are closed until further notice.

Please be advised that interest will not be added on April 1st if your taxes have not been paid by the due date.  Once Council is able to meet and change the by-law we will let our residents know when taxes should be paid to avoid interest.

Curbside Collection:  Out of concern for their employees and families, our curbside collection contractor has advised that effective immediately all solid waste placed out for cubside collection must be securely tied in plastic bags.  No loose material will be collected at this time.  Also, they will not be sorting through recycling, it will be left at the curb if it isn't sorted properly or is contaminated.  Thank you for your support and cooperation during this concerning time.

In an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19 Council has decided to close Township facilities, including the Library, Centre '76, the Joshua Bates Centre and the Heritage Museum. The municipal office will be closed to the public beginning Wednesday, March 18th.  Staff will be in the office to take calls and answer emails.  We will work with you to address your municipal needs, call 613-924-2044 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. The Transfer Site will be open regular hours.  Garbage Bag Tags will be available at Athens Fresh Mart, Blanchards Garage and The Village Store.

If you would like to pay your bill, you can do so by calling the office at 613-924-2044 with your credit card number as well, internet banking is also available.  You can find the Township under (Athens Twsp Taxes) for most banks and  your roll number, which is on the top right corner of your bill, is the account number.  If you prefer to write a cheque, you can drop your cheque and the stub from your bill (in an envelope) through the mail slot to the left of the office door or send it regular mail. 

Tax payments are accepted at BMO, for their customers only.

Building Permits:  The Township of Rideau Lakes municipal office is also closed to the public, this is the location to drop off building permits for the Township of Athens.  There is a drop box between their doors if anyone needs to drop anything off, but they are asking that everything be done via email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or phone call (613) 928-2251.

Applications are still being accepted but need to be sent via a scanned attachment to an email and payment arrangement will have to be made when the permit is issued or they can advise of the payment amount and a cheque can be sent in the mail.  Once a permit is ready it will be emailed to the applicant for signature.

Due to heavy rains in the area, several roads in the township are closed, only local traffic permitted.  If you see pylons on the road use extreme caution.  

Lower Oakleaf Road is closed at Slack Road, if you need to travel west on Lower Oakleaf Rd. take County Road 42 to Upper Oakleaf Rd. which ends at Lower Oakleaf Rd. turn right and you will be headed towards Lyndhurst.

Osborne Road at County Rd 42 is closed.
